History & significance
Hari Raya Puasa (Aidilfitri) marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of dawn-to-dusk fasting. It is a day of gratitude, forgiveness and reunion. Its date follows the Islamic lunar calendar and is confirmed by moon-sighting, moving about 10–11 days earlier each year. It is one of Singapore’s two gazetted Muslim public holidays.
How it’s observed in Singapore
The morning begins with congregational Eid prayers at mosques, followed by seeking forgiveness from elders and open houses where families welcome guests with dishes such as ketupat, rendang and lontong. In the weeks of Ramadan beforehand, the Geylang Serai Ramadan bazaar and light-up draw big crowds for food and festive shopping, and families gather for iftar to break fast.
What's open and what's closed
Offices, banks and schools are closed and transport runs to a public-holiday schedule; malls stay open. Mosques and the Geylang Serai and Kampong Gelam areas are very busy on the morning itself and through Ramadan evenings, so allow extra time and consider the MRT. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed in lieu.
