History & significance

Hari Raya Haji (Aidiladha), the festival of sacrifice, marks the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage to Mecca. It commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God, for whom a ram was substituted. It falls on the 10th day of Zulhijjah in the Islamic calendar, about two months after Hari Raya Puasa, and its date is confirmed by moon-sighting.

How it’s observed in Singapore

Muslims attend morning congregational prayers at mosques, after which the korban (ritual sacrifice) is carried out through participating mosques and coordinated by MUIS. The meat is divided into three parts — for the family, for relatives and friends, and for the needy. Compared with Hari Raya Puasa the mood is quieter and more reflective, with visiting on a smaller scale.

What's open and what's closed

Offices, banks and schools are closed and transport runs to a public-holiday schedule; malls stay open. Mosques are busy on the morning of the prayers and korban, so nearby parking can be limited. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed in lieu.
