Singapore Long Weekends: Which Ones to Actually Use

Every January the same article goes up on a dozen sites: here are Singapore's long weekends this year, here are the bridge days. The exact dates are worth having: they live on the 2026 and 2027 hubs, worked out straight from the gazetted dates. The list itself, though, is not the useful part. The useful part is what none of those articles tell you: which long weekends are worth using, and why some years hand you six and others barely two.

Why one year gives you six and the next gives you two

Singapore's eleven public holidays fall into two groups, and that split explains the whole thing.

• Four are fixed to a date: New Year's Day, Labour Day, National Day, Christmas. They just rotate through the week, so each one lands next to a weekend roughly two years in five.
• Seven follow the lunar or religious calendar: Chinese New Year, Good Friday, the two Hari Rayas, Vesak Day and Deepavali. These drift several days earlier each year, so where they land is different every time.

A "good" long-weekend year is simply one where a lot of those happen to fall on a Friday, a Monday, or a Sunday. It is not something you can predict years out, which is exactly why it is worth checking the moment the dates are gazetted rather than assuming this year looks like last year.

The Sunday rule that quietly hands you a three-day weekend

When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a public holiday by law. So a Sunday holiday is never wasted. It always turns into a three-day weekend.

A Saturday holiday does not do this on its own. If you do not normally work Saturdays you are owed a day off in lieu or an extra day's pay, but it does not create a long weekend by itself. This one line is the most commonly misread thing on any holiday calendar, and it is why two years with the same eleven holidays can produce very different numbers of long weekends.

Which ones are actually worth using

Not every three-day weekend is equal, and this is the honest part the travel posts leave out:

• Chinese New Year is the longest guaranteed break, but it is the worst one to fly out on. Airfares peak, many shops and eateries close for two to five days, and the island is at its quietest. It is a superb weekend to rest and a poor one to travel.
• Good Friday, Vesak Day and Deepavali leave malls, transport and most attractions running normally, so a staycation genuinely works. You are not stuck with everything shut.
• The Sunday-to-Monday holidays (National Day most years, sometimes Vesak or Deepavali) are the most predictable long weekends on the calendar, which means flights and hotels for them spike earliest. If you want one of these, book months out.

The honest rule of thumb: a mid-week holiday you bridge with a single day of leave often beats a "free" long weekend for actually getting away, because half the country is already off on the free ones.

Turning a mid-week holiday into a four-day break

A holiday on a Tuesday sits one working day from the weekend. Take the Monday and you get Saturday to Tuesday off. A Thursday holiday works the same way with the Friday. One leave day, four days off.
